Local Content Initiatives

Local content is important for ReconAfrica.   Job creation, skills development, training opportunities, local and national goods-and-services spending, contractor opportunities, technology transfer through investments in schools, teachers, and the expansion of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) all assist with local content.

Thinking, Training and Hiring Locally

Training and Scholarships

10 Fully-funded scholarships in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), equally selected from Kavango East and Kavango West regions.

ReconAfrica places strong emphasis on hiring locally and nationally whenever possible. ReconAfrica places strong emphasis on hiring locally and nationally whenever possible. We have had over 2400 roles filled by Namibian residents for our ongoing exploration activities includng for our different operations, ESG and management requirements.  They’ve worked in roles such as: electricians; rig floor hands; project managers; seismic panga crew; material technical specialists (construction, environment, wildlife surveying, water, and hydrology); health, safety and environmental experts; administrative assistants; garden site workers; and general and casual laborers. Our hiring program has included members of the San community.

Additionally, ReconAfrica is working with educational institutions to enhance on-site training programs directly related to the environment and to drilling and seismic activities.

ReconAfrica works with local, regional, and national business suppliers and service providers in a broad range of sectors, including water well drilling; construction; logistics and transport; telecom; camp management; training; medical services and supplies; human resources and contracting; engineering and project management; and environmental services.

ReconAfrica is committed to helping Namibians gain the necessary knowledge and skills to participate in oil and gas development.  As part of our licence, the petroleum agreement with the Government of Namibia sets aside funds for Namibian training programs. However, ReconAfrica is going beyond these contributions to provide our own programs to develop local talent.  We implement compliance requirements for all hiring and have a strong commitment to gender diversity, with a focus on increasing the number of women hired locally.

In the Kavango area, ReconAfrica is currently supporting the growth of various service industries through improved water and power access and the use of dual-purpose infrastructure.  While the economic benefits of oil and gas development are significant, with potential government revenues in the form of royalties and taxes, we also value local content and also appreciate the importance for those living, where we operate, to benefit.

Training and Scholarships - Nurses

REN in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare is sponsoring 7 nursing students from the San communities of the two regions.

ReconBotswana has completed training commitments as part of our PEL 001 licence requirements. We will be developing an ESG program that will be tailored to the needs identified by Batswanans in PEL 001  and with the government authorities, once exploration operational actvities are on the ground and have commenced.
